5-HTP: Two clinical studies at the University of Rome examined the
effects of this substance on weight loss. The first study showed that 5-HTP
cause weight loss in women who made no conscious effort to lose weight. In a
second study with no dietary restrictions the first six weeks followed by a
1200 calorie diet participants reported early satiation and lost an average
of 11.63 pounds at 12 weeks versus 1.87 pounds for the group on a placebo.
Other conditions helped by 5-HTP are low serotonin levels associated
with sleep problems, depression, anxiety, binge or compulsive eating, restless
leg syndrome, migraines, fibromyalgia and a low pain threshold.
Brindall Berry (HCA): Studies show that HCA curbs appetite, reduces
food intake, and cuts the production of fats and cholesterol. One case report
found that eating 1 gm (1000 mg) of HCA before each meal resulted in the loss
of 1 pound per day.
HCA is a lipogenesis inhibitor, i.e. it stops the body from making and storing
fat. Normally, after carbohydrates (sugars and starches) are consumed, the liver
produces fat from the carbohydrate through and enzyme called ATP-citrate lyase.
HCA inhibits this enzyme. The production of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides is
slowed down, and energy goes into making glycogen in the liver instead of pounds
around the waist.
Forskolin: Lipolysis, the breakdown of stored fat, is regulated by cAMP.
Studies show that forskolin stimulates lipolysis (break-up of fat) and inhibits
the production of new fat. It also counteracts the age-related decrease in
response of fat cells to thermogenic (heat producing and calorie burning) agents.
Clinical studies reveal that forskolin does not cause adverse effects on the
systolic/diastolic blood pressure or pulse rate. Moreover, Forskolin is known to
exert antidepressant activity, lower blood pressure, increase heart muscle
contraction without increasing oxygen consumption and regulate the secretion of
insulin, thereby helping to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.
